The Legend of Gimghoul Castle
Peter Domgoole was a student at UNC-Chapel Hill in 1831. Soon after coming to the school, he fell in love with a young lady named Miss Fanny and they began dating. Every evening they would meet on the top of Piney Prospect to sit by the spring and talk.
But someone else loved Miss Fanny and he became very jealous that she had chosen Peter over him. So, in a fit of rage, the man challenged Peter to a duel. Peter accepted and the two met one evening on Piney Prospect. During the duel, Peter was killed.
All of the people watching the duel became very frightened and decided to hide his body. So, they buried him in a shallow grave and put a rock over his burial spot.
The next day, Fanny came to their meeting place, as usual, to wait for Peter, but he never came. Every day she came back and waited for him, but she never saw him again. Though she asked everyone she knew what had happened to him, she never discovered the truth.
Legend has it that the ghost of Miss Fanny still roams their spot on Piney Prospect waiting for her Peter.
