Hatteras Jack
Many years ago, boats found it very difficult to make their way through the Hatteras Inlet. Because it was 1790, there were very few ways that people were able to help the ships reach land and dock by traveling through the twisty and dangerous channel. But one day help came in a very unusual way.
Ship captains began to notice a white dolphin leading boats through the channel. Amazingly, the dolphin always seemed to know the best way to take the ships so that they would stay safe and reach the dock. Soon the captains began to trust the dolphin and named him Hatteras Jack. When they would reach the Hatteras Inlet they would blow their horns to call to him for help. Hatteras Jack would always come to help lead them to safety. After leading a boat in, the dolphin would put on a show of jumps and flips to celebrate the ships safe arrival.
But soon, people began inventing better ways to help people guide ships. Hatteras Jack must have felt that the ships needed him less, because soon he disappeared from the inlet and has never been seen again.
